Baby Eles, First Aid Training and Kit Checks: Becoming an Intern in Huay Pakoot

Hi, I’m Jonathan,
I’m from Derbyshire in the UK and I am an intern at the Thai Elephant project. This week I came to the end of the three weeks volunteer work and started my Intern projects here. The main part of the project is to do the behaviour and feeding studies (scan sampling and all occurrences) for Bpee Mai. Boisterous, curious and weighing over half a tonne, this three years old “baby” elephant gets himself into a bit of trouble. Over the past few weeks we have seen a growing relationship between him and Tong Dee, the grandma of the group from who he often tries to steel food. He still takes an objection to car and scooters, even parked ones. The other parts of the project include setting up a basic elephant health checkups which volunteers will conduct every Tuesday and Thursday. I completed the emergency responder first aid course. Looking forward to the next two months at the project.
