The Thai King’s Birthday Celebrations

Today was the King of Thailand’s 84th birthday and to celebrate the villagers put on a small celebration at the temple. Thailand has a constitutional monarchy and the King is much respected and revered by the Thai people. To celebrate the King’s birthday villagers and volunteers assembled at the temple. Our lovely monk Sipicon and his monk friend who visits the village frequently put on a small service. They had placed several big candles in front of a table that held a picture of the king. There was a short prayer and then candles were passed out to everyone. All the candles were lit and then we placed them in ceramic planters full of dirt. Lastly, a giant bonfire was lit and volunteers had a chance to meet some of the villagers and hang out with the community. And of course there were lots of photos taken by volunteers and villagers alike.
