Staff and intern blogs - Morgan

My name is Morgan Movius and I am a 6 month elephant intern on the GVI elephant project in Huay Pakoot. I recently graduated with a B.S. in biology, and I wrote my senior thesis and conducted primary research in the field of animal behavior.  From this internship I hope to gain direct experience and knowledge on elephant behavior and physiology which I can apply in the future to a career in veterinary science and medicine.
While on project I will be going on regular hikes to observe the elephant’s behavior, and as my internship develops I will focus on one of the infant elephants in particular.  I will also take over running bi-weekly health checks with my fellow elephant intern and work to further develop the health check procedure in order to gain the most accurate and helpful data on the elephant’s health and wellbeing. In addition, I will take over giving some of the elephant presentations to new volunteers, and will give bi-monthly ‘ele chats’ on information found in scientific articles.  I hope to learn as much as I can about elephants while on the project and through my role as an intern I hope that I can help others learn about these incredible animals as well.
